Research prepared for a Boston Federal Reserve labor market conference found that whether driving for Uber to make ends meet or taking piecework jobs in retirement, casual contract workers sometimes don't consider themselves "employed" or even a part of the labor force. The research involved reexamining the detailed responses to a New York Fed survey of "informal work" from 2015 through 2022. Other research looked at how job training and policies towards employing those with a criminal record might help. Their research found many gig workers want additional hours of formal employment, suggesting more untapped labor supply. "And the higher levels of activity and participation can benefit those brought into the labor market, contributing to a vibrant economy that works for all."

"Over the next two decades, the dependency ratio of India will be one of the lowest among regional economies," said Goldman Sachs Research's India economist, Santanu Sengupta. Sengupta added that the key to drawing out the potential of India's rapidly growing population is to boost the participation of its labor force. The Achilles heel to the bank's projection is the labor force participation rate — and whether it increases at the rate which Goldman projects. "The labor force participation rate in India has declined over the last 15 years," the report noted, underlining that women's participation rate in the labor force is "significantly lower" than men's.

Sebastian Galassi, 26, was a delivery rider in Florence, Italy, for the Spanish startup Glovo. He died on October 1 after his moped collided with a Land Rover SUV while on shift for Glovo. His family discovered an email the next day firing him, which Glovo claims was a mistake. The following day, Galassi's family discovered an email informing Galassi that he had been fired from the company "for non-compliance with the terms and conditions" of his role. A Glovo spokesperson told Insider: "We deeply regret the death of the delivery driver Sebastian Galassi as a result of a traffic accident in Florence, Italy.
